Ted Dunning: I like to think of big data as having three V’s: volume, velocity, and variety. Volume refers to the sheer quantity of data that businesses have to deal with. This can be anything from customer purchase histories to social media posts and sensor readings.

Velocity refers to the speed at which this data is generated and needs to be processed. And variety encompasses all the different types of data that need to be managed – everything from text documents to images and videos. How did we get here?

What are some of the key drivers behind the growth of big data? Friedman: There are really two key drivers: increases in computing power and storage capacity, on one hand; and changes in the way we interact with technology, on the other hand. In terms of computing power and storage capacity, we’ve seen incredible advances in recent years.

Today’s computers are orders of magnitude more powerful than those of just a few years ago; and storage has become increasingly cheaper as well. As for changes in how we interact with technology, think about all the ways you generate digitaldata in your everyday life – through social media posts, online shopping transactions, GPS-tagged photos or videos… The list goes on and on.

What Do We Do With All of This Big Data Susan Etlinger?
