Gene Luen Yang

Gene Luen Yang is an American cartoonist. His graphic novels American Born Chinese, Boxers & Saints, and The Secret Coders have all been New York Times Bestsellers. He was the National Ambassador for Young People’s Literature and a recipient of the MacArthur Genius Grant.

Yang was born in Alhambra, California, to Taiwanese immigrants who came to the United States in the late 1960s. He grew up in Sacramento County, California, where he attended public schools. He received his BFA in illustration from The University of California at Davis and his MFA in design from Stanford University.

Yang began his career as a computer programmer but soon realized that he preferred making comics. His first published work was Gordon Yamamoto and the King of the Geeks (self-published under the pen name Lazy D), which won a 2003 Xeric Award. Yang’s next project was2006’s American Born Chinese, which became one of the first graphic novels to be nominated for a National Book Award.
