Atrahasis Epic Summary

The Atrahasis Epic is a Mesopotamian flood myth that tells the story of how the god Enlil, in an attempt to destroy humankind for their noise and disobedience, sends a great flood. The only survivor is Atrahasis, who builds a boat and saves his family and animals. Enlil then repents and promises never to flood the world again.

This ancient story has been found in many different cultures around the world, including the Gilgamesh Epic from ancient Sumeria. Like many other flood myths, it likely arose as a way to explain natural disasters such as floods or earthquakes. The Atrahasis Epic is thought to date back to around 1650 BC.

It was written down on cuneiform tablets in Akkadian, which was the language of Mesopotamia at that time. The epic was probably first told orally, however, and only later written down. There are many different versions of the story, but they all follow similar plot points.

In one version, Enlil gets angry with humankind because they make too much noise and he can’t sleep at night. He decides to destroy them with a great flood but is talked out of it by the goddess Ninurta . instead Ninurta suggests creating famine and disease which will kill humans more slowly .

However these plans fail as well , so Enlil creates a great storm which causes a massive flood . Atrahasis is warned about the coming flood by either Ea or another god , depending on the version ,and told to build a large boat . He does so ,and fills it with his family , friends , animals ,and enough food and water to last for months .

The storm lasts for seven days and seven nights before finally abating . When it’s over Atrahasis opens up his boat and release all its occupants onto dry land once again . Enlil is furious when he learns that humans have survived yet again , but eventually agrees not to destroy them this time .

In some versions of the story he even blesses Atrahasis for his ingenuity in surviving . The moral of most versions ofthe tale seemsto be that even though humans can be annoying at times , they are still worth saving .
