The valley was also known as the Valley of the Stonethrowers because the people of Makkah used to come there and throw stones at the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and his Companions.
The Surah was revealed at a time when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and his Companions were facing intense persecution from the Quraysh. They had migrated to Madinah, but the Quraysh were determined to exterminate them.
