I had the pleasure of reading A Hundred Summers by Beatriz Williams over the summer and I could not put it down! The book is set in the summer of 1938, on Block Island off the coast of Rhode Island. It follows Lily Dane and Nick Greenwald, who were once childhood friends and are now estranged.
When Nick returns to the island with his new fiancée, Budgie Byrne, Lily must confront her feelings for him.
The novel alternates between present day and flashbacks to 1938, providing insight into both what led to Lily and Nick’s estrangement as well as what might happen if they reconcile. Williams’ writing is beautiful and lyrical, making it a perfect beach read.
But despite its lighthearted tone, the book tackles some heavy topics like betrayal, grief, and classism. If you’re looking for a enjoyable yet thought-provoking read this summer, I would highly recommend A Hundred Summers.
